Today’s MLB News
Evan Longoria heads to the DL with a broken wrist; his Rookie of the Year 2008 season is almost certainly over. If you look up, out your window, and then at about ten o’clock, you’ll see, if you squint hard enough, the large outline of one of the fantasy gods extending his middle finger in the general direction of Bryan Alsworth.
Let the Yankees’ Glorious March to Victory 2008 (which has been consistently predicted in this space right up to this very day) begin!
The Diamondbacks acquired Adam Dunn, who is only leading the entire freakin’ major leagues in home runs (OK, tied with Ryan Howard and Carlos Quentin) on a waiver deal for Dallas Buck and two Players To Be Named Later. There’s speculation that one of the PTBNLs is actually a better prospect than Buck. That would make a lot more sense than if the Reds basically gave him away for Buck and a bag of balls.
The incredibly stupid thing is, nobody with a worse record than the Diamondbacks claimed him. But ah, the problem is, nobody with a worse record than the Diamondbacks had any use for a slugger that was leaving in two months. Only the Dodgers are in anything resembling contention and could have claimed him ahead of Arizona, and they already have, on some nights, two well above average outfielders sitting on the bench (thanks to pervasive organizational stupidity, or “Ned Colletti Disease” as it’s known in these parts). They could have (should have) put a claim on Dunn just to stop the Diamondbacks from doing so, but there again we have Colletti asleep at the switch.
Question: Why didn’t, say, the Padres send a couple semi-prospects Jocketty’s way with an eye toward nabbing two high draft picks when Dunn signs with somebody else this winter? That of course leads to the question of why didn’t Jocketty just keep him and keep the picks for himself, but…
Has a guy leading the majors in home runs ever been traded in August on a waiver deal? I rather doubt it.
